Getting Extra Time on the CA Bar Exam for AD/HD
10 March 2011
Today, a student called who has AD/HD and wanted to know what do in order to get extra time on the CA Bar Exam. He also asked whether Barwinners works with accommodated students. (Yes, we do work with accommodated students. In fact, about 10-15% of our class gets extra time on the CA bar exam and have qualified for Testing Accommodations).

Important Tip: You Need a documented history of AD/HD
It has been my experience over the past 20 years that the CA State Bar tends to grant Testing Accommodations primarily to those students with AD/HD who have a documented history of AD/HD. So if you believe that you have AD/HD, it is better to get tested and diagnosed early on in while still in law school, and to request special testing accommodations for your law school exams. This shows a Proven Documented History. Because of the voluminous amounts of reading and prolonged concentration that law school requires, many students never were diagnosed in their undergraduate studies because they were able to compensate for or hide their AD/HD.
Important Tip: Get Formal Testing
Even though the bar states that Psychological and cognitive tests are not deemed necessary to confirm an AD/HD diagnosis, I HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT YOU GET FORMAL TESTING to authenticate your AD/HD. It is rare for the bar to grant Testing Accomodations without empirical proof.
Important Tip: Don’t Wait Until The Last Minute
Again, get tested while you are still in law school and don’t wait until the last minute to fill out Form A and Form D and to apply for Testing Accommodations. There are deadlines for each bar exam administration.
